Arc de Triomphe skip-the-line tickets: what actually works

Let's be honest: nobody skips the security check. But a timed ticket removes the purchase queue — the longest one — and a few smart habits save another twenty minutes. Here is the method.

  • Purchase queue skipped
  • Guaranteed time slot
  • Mobile ticket
  • Flexible cancellation

Understand the three queues at the Arc de Triomphe

On site there is not one queue but three. Knowing which one your ticket removes saves you a bad surprise:

QueueWhere?Typical waitDoes a skip-the-line ticket remove it?
1. Ticket-purchase queueTicket desk, after the underpass15 – 45 min in seasonYes — that is the whole point of a timed online ticket
2. Security checkMonument entrance5 – 20 minNo — compulsory for everyone, ticket or not
3. The staircase284 spiral stepsflows freely, slows at peak timesNo — but going early keeps it clear

In plain terms: "coupe-file" (skip-the-line) here means a prepaid timed ticket: you walk straight to the security check without stopping at the desk. Off-peak, that saves 10 minutes; on a summer Saturday at sunset, it is often 40 minutes or more.

Where to buy a reliable skip-the-line ticket

  • Our partner Headout (calendar alongside): official timed tickets resold with instant confirmation, mobile ticket and free cancellation on most options. It is the channel we recommend — and the one that funds this independent guide.
  • The official ticket office of the Centre des monuments nationaux sells the same timed slots on its own website.
  • Avoid: street resellers around the Étoile and websites that never name their operator. An already-scanned ticket only reveals itself at the turnstile.

Just need a standard entry ticket? Compare the options first in our tickets & prices guide — skip-the-line only pays off if you visit at busy times.

The insider entry: five habits that get you in faster

  • Take the 10am slot. The security check runs at full speed at opening: you are on the terrace by 10:20am, ahead of the groups.
  • On Tuesdays, aim for 11am sharp. The delayed Tuesday opening creates a false quiet hour: visitors assume it is closed all morning.
  • Travel light. No suitcases or bags over 40 × 40 × 20 cm — there is no cloakroom or left luggage, and oversized bags are turned away at security.
  • Ticket loaded, screen bright. The QR code is scanned at the entrance: save an offline screenshot and push the brightness up — 4G is patchy in the underpass.
  • Use the Grande-Armée side when the Champs overflows. The underpass has two entrances; the one on Avenue de la Grande-Armée is unknown to the tour groups.

Is skip-the-line worth the money?

The Headout timed ticket starts at the desk price (from €16): in that case the question answers itself — guaranteed slot and no purchase queue, at no extra cost. The pricier options add services (audio guide ~€39, Seine cruise or Eiffel Tower combos): they make sense if you wanted those activities anyway, not because they skip any more queue. Combo details on the rooftop page and in the tiles at the top of this page.

Groups, families, pushchairs

Timed tickets are individual: for a group of more than 20 people, use the group booking service of the official ticket office. With a family, remember that under-18s enter free — but they still need a free ticket, collected or reserved, and it goes through the same security queue. Pushchairs stay at the bottom: 284 steps, no public lift.

Frequently asked questions

Do Arc de Triomphe skip-the-line tickets really exist?

Yes, in the form of a prepaid timed ticket: it removes the purchase queue at the desk. The security check, however, remains compulsory for everyone — no ticket bypasses it.

How long is the queue without a skip-the-line ticket?

In high season, 15 to 45 minutes at the ticket desk, plus 5 to 20 minutes at security. With a timed ticket, only security remains.

What happens if I miss my time slot?

Operators generally tolerate a reasonable delay on the same day, but it is not guaranteed. Most Headout tickets can be cancelled or rebooked free of charge up to 24 hours ahead — change it the day before instead.

Does the Paris Museum Pass skip the line at the Arc de Triomphe?

The pass skips the purchase queue, like a timed ticket. In very busy periods an additional time-slot reservation may be required — check the current conditions.

Can I buy a ticket on site on the day?

Yes, except on closure days or when capacity is reached. But between the purchase queue and security, you can lose an hour on a summer Saturday. The online ticket starts at the same price.

Does skip-the-line include the lift?

No. The lift is reserved for visitors with reduced mobility, whatever ticket you hold. Everyone takes the 284 steps.
